So I have this very special skein of luxury yarn - and only one skein of it (75 m). I want to use as much of it as I can, and I want to make mitts.

After wondering about how to know when the cuff is long enough, I figured out that I could make them top down - and only do a gusset thumb, so I couls then make the cuff as long as I had yarn for.

I started out by dividing the yarn in two equal amount balls.
I then (using the numbers from the ball band) figured out I needed about 34 st to go around. Since I wanted to make a (k3, p1)ribbing, I adjusted the number to 36 st, which I cast on using yarn from the first (smallest) skein.

I knit in pattern until the mitt reached from the base of my fingers until my thumb (which was 6 cm), then cast on 10 st in the middle of the round (for the reverse thumb gusset).

On every other round I then decreased 2 st in the gusset until the number of stitches were back to 36.
Then I continued in ribbing pattern until I only had enough yarn left on the ball to cast off (the mitt was then 16 cm long).

Then I’ve cast on for the second mitt, using the second ball of yarn.

When finished, I still had a little bit of yarn left - used that to crochet around the thumbs, to add a little length. Then I used the leftover teal Rowan (from my Ishbel) to crochet picot edges around the thumb and the finger openings.
