Notes

Decided to knit this as much of this in one piece as possible because I hate seaming.

Sleeves
Started with the sleeves, because I am also lazy with swatching. Cast on 34 rather than 33 stitches for the ribbing, and thus didn’t increase by one stitch on the first all knit row after the ribbing. Would probably add at least two more stitches if I knit this again so that I have a bit more room if I wear this over a long-sleeved shirt.

Body

  • Since the gauge/measurement calculations are off in the pattern, I used uncia’s recalculations to determine the number of stitches to cast on for each section. I increased the back from 83 to 99 stitches and the left/right fronts from 45 to 50 stitches. I did not add the extra stitch for each of the left and right sides after the ribbing, though I did add the one for the back.

Extra stitches were placed in the stockinette sections on either side of the cable panels, as suggested by others.

  • I didn’t quite understand the RT2/LT2 intructions until I watched this video. Most other RT2/LT2 instructions that I found didn’t seem to involve k2tog or k2tog tbl, which made it confusing.

  • I found the Sl 4 sts WYIB instructions confusing as written, as they kept coming out exactly like Sl 4 sts knitwise. Instead, I slipped all four stitches to the right needle (dropping the extra wraps along the way), and slipped them back to the left needle. If the stitches were numbered 1-4, with 4 being the one closest to the tip of the left needle, I then slipped stitches 1&2 over stitches 3&4 but keeping them on the left needle, and then knit all stitches in order (so 2, 1, 4, 3).

Yoke

  • I did the decrease rounds in the yoke mostly as per instructions; didn’t adhere to it as closely for the sleeve decreases, but did on the back and fonts. The instructions tell you to bind off each sleeve once there are four stitches left on the needle.

  • Obviously I wasn’t going to be binding these off, so I just kept decreasing until there were no sleeve stitches left.

Neck
Knit the 18 stitch extensions on both the left and right front, but chose to graft them together using the kitchener stitch rather than binding them off and then sewing them together.

Pockets

  • I added afterthought pockets, though beware that it can be a bit challenging to add them across the cable pattern. I couldn’t find any instructions on how to do this with a combination of knit and purl stitches, so I did the bold and reckless thing and cut into the yarn without first putting the stitches on any needles (as per this).

  • I added the pocket on the third row of the Wishbone cable. I’ve included a photo of the process; the white mark is the piece of yarn I cut, the pink mar is the purl stitch below it, and the blue mark is one of the legs of the cabled stitch in the first row of the Wishbone. I slowly picked out the yarn one stitch at a time, adding those individually to the needles as I went along.

Blocking
I’ve used this yarn before, but it really grew on this project in a way I haven’t experienced previously. The whole sweater is now pretty long; the body comes down 3-4 inches below the sleeves and hits me mid thigh (and I’m 5’8”). It will help keep my bum warm, but that definitely wasn’t my intention!
