Back to colorwork at the GPY sock club. Rather than using a mix of leftovers, I’m going with 2 leftovers and newly purchased coordinating yarn. I am going to use these three colors to create a planned layout.
Summary
-
The staccato is a bit thinner than the tosh sock. It seems to be working ok, but probably not the best match for stranded colorwork when using tosh.
-
Use of color: all of my horizontals, cuff, leaf band background are cousteau. Stripes are in fig and grant park. The leaves in the leaf band are grant park.
-
My leaf bands alternate direction in each sock. The leaf bands run in opposite directions on the left and right socks
-
Needles:
- Cast on: US 1.0 (2.25mm)
- Cuff: US 1.0 (2.25mm)
- Leg: US 1.5 (2.50mm)
- Leg, final striped section: US 1.0 (2.25mm)
- Gusset, US 1.0
- Heel turn, US 1.0
- foot & toe, US 1.0
-
The heel starts at the leg start of round -- the start of leg round becomes the center back of the heel. To make this easier, I shifted the stitches around so that I have the 32 instep stitches on one needle and all other stitches on the other needle. I have marked the start of round and the center of the instep (these are the the original needle positions).
-
While I would have liked to end the foot with a stripe section (before a solid cousteau toe), the sock would have been way too long. So I ended the foot with a leaf band (before a striped toe).
-
After ending with a leaf band, knit to end of sole stitches and reset start of round. Cousteau toe: D K D K D K D K D K D K D K (22 stitches each side); D D D D D D D D (6 stitches each side). NOTE: I ripped this toe out. There is a picture of the results.
-
How I’m knitting a striped toe: KKD KKD KD KD KD KD KD (22 each side) DDDD (14 stitches each side) cut green and in brown one more D (12 stitches each side). Kitchener closed. Note: This is my final toe.
-
I seemed to have used a great deal more yarn in this sock than normal. Its possible that my calculations are off, so I wouldn’t rely on these numbers for yardage used.
-
Even though I eliminated one leg repeat, the legs are still pretty tall for me.
Journal
2016-04-10: Cast on with GTCO on US 1.0 (2.25 mm) needles. Complete cuffs 1 & 2. Switch to US 1.5 . Complete striped section on sock 1.
2016-04-11: Complete first leaf band on sock 1. Continue working on sock 2. After completing the stripes i discovered that I had cast on 4 stitches too few. I played with increases in the start of the leaf band, but didn’t like the results, so, I completely ripped out the second sock and I’ll start again.

Cast on and knit second cuff again. Change needles to US 1.5 (2.5 mm) needles and begin striped section.

Complete striped section and first leaf band on second sock. I’m using the direction opposite of the first sock. The leaf bands will be reflections between the socks.
2016-04-13: Complete striped section, leaf band; sock 1. Switch to US 1.0 (2.25mm) needles and complete the final leg striped section.
2016-04-15: Complete first leg. Start gusset. Complete first leaf band with increases; 16 stitches increased.
2016-04-16: Complete gusset increases, first leg. Complete heel decreases, first leg. Complete next round with remaining 2 decreases. Move back to second sock.
2016-04-17: Complete first increase leaf band, second sock; 88 stitches.
2016-04-18: Complete second increase leaf band, second sock; 104 stitches
2016-04-21: Complete heel turn, second sock.
2016-04-25: Complete foot, both socks.
2016-04-26: Complete toe in cousteau. I’m not fond of the results. Complete second toe in stripes. I like this one better, so I ripped out the cousteau toe. Complete second sock toe. Kitchener toes and weave in ends.
2016-04-27: Socks blocked, waiting for photos.
