I knit tight and my initial attempt at this hat resulted in something the circumference of a baseball (can you swatch? what swatch?), so i ripped it. My next attempt was better, but the hat is still small, probably too small for the intended recipient. I will knit another on a US 5 instead of the US 4.
Summary
- Cast on using German Twisted Cast on on a US 6 (4.0mm).
- Changing k3tog to a cdd.
- Rewrote chart to use the correct symbol for Ktbl, leaving the stitch above the YO a plain knit stitch.
- Setup row calls for a knit into back and front. This may be a translation issue, but I did it the way specified.
- The stitch following the KBF was a straight knit stitch. Again I followed the pattern, but this probably should have been a Ktbl.
- This hat fits my head and a little bigger. It probably won’t fit the person its for, so I need to do a bigger one.
- Cast on is tight. There is still some stretch in the hat itself.
- I’m a tight knitter!
- See Virtauksia One for my next attempt at this hat.
Journal
2012-08-02: Started with US3 needles and the ribbed portion of the hat was way too small. Ripped out and started with US 4. This is a possibility, but it is still small.
2012-08-03: Completed first pattern repeat. The hat is still small. It barely fits my head. My chart had one mistake in the translation, so I’m replacing it. The cdd is a real improvement over the k3tog.
2012-08-04: Completed main chart and top of hat chart. Weave in ends.
Next Time
- Cast on 120 and don’t do the setup row.
- Do 6 pattern repeats.
- If I do the setup row, do a KFB not a KBF and twist the knit stitch.
- Knit with a US 5 instead of a 4.
- Cast on with a bigger needle.
