Main colour (MC): White yarn
2nd colour (C2): Rainbow striped yarn
Provisional CO 48 sts.
Rows 1-6: Knit.
Row 7: *YO, k2tog* repeat *-* until the end of the row.
Rows 8-13: Knit.
Unravel the provisional CO and unite the two ends by knitting them together on row 14.
Rows: 15-17: Knit.
Stripes
(At this point I recommend chanching to 1-2 sizes thicker needles as the stripes will make the mittens a bit snug.)
Row 1: With C2 *knit 3, slip 1 as if to purl (yarn in back)*, repeat *-* until the end of the row.
Row 2: With MC *knit 1, slip 1 as if to purl (yarn in back), knit 2*, repeat *-* until the end of the row.
Repeat these two rows until its time to make the thumb. I’ve used an aftertought thumb here.
On the needle where the thumb goes (left hand: 2nd needle, right hand: 3rd needle), knit 2, do not cut the yarn. Get some scrap yarn and knit 8 sts with it. Then knit the same 8 stitches again, now with your working yarn. Continue knitting the pattern.
Knit until your pinky finger is covered and start the decreases.
On 1st & 3rd needle: Knit 1, slip 1 as to knit, knit 1 and slip the previous slipped stitch over that. Knit until the end of the row.
On 2nd & 4th needle: Knit until there’s 3 sts remaining on the needle, k2tog, knit 1.
Decreases are made every other row until there’s 16 sts left (I used kitchener’s stitch to close the gap).
Thumb
Pick 8 sts above and below the scrap yarn, pick two more stitches on both ends (total of 20 stitches). Knit 15 row with MC and decrease three times every other row (as was done when closing the hand). Use kitchener’s stitch to close the remaining 6 stitches.
