Notes

I love love this design. I’ll knit it again, just not on a deadline! Its really forgiving as to the exact sizes of sections, good for limited quantities of yarn.

Summary of mods:

  • Didnt bind off, just put sts on waste yarn.
  • Didnt slip sts at end of row. Garter st is easy to pick up.
  • Reduced width of large white stripe due to ball running out.
  • 3 ridges (not 4) for lengthwise black stripes.
  • 2 ridges (not 1) for widthwise black stripes at the end of a section, to make the lines a bit more prominent.
  • Reduced end sections by 2 ridges each to compensate for wider black stripes.
  • Changed order of colours in section 6 - C5, C3, C1
  • 48 rows of C3 in section 5, no C1
  • 5 ridges of black on borders
  • Icord bindoff, using applied icord at end of rows in lengthwise borders in order to use a continuous piece of yarn.

What i would do differently:

  • Provisionally cast on at the start.
  • Knit outermost border in the round w mitered corners.

April 6. Given to a very appreciative Kim.

11pm April 5 - Weaving in the last end, I never want to see another end, and present me wants to kick past me for not carrying the black up the side. But if i’d done that I wouldn’t have been able to haul it around, and I’d never have gotten done if not for all the on the go knitting, so it was the right choice.

April 4 - was briefly ahead of schedule by a day and then ‘cleverly’ decided to do an icord bindoff. It looks awesome but now i am behind - 2 rows of black, the icord on this side and all the ends to go. Husband is taking the lead on baby care tomorrow and I’m going to knit like the wind.

April 1 - changed the order of stripes at the 3-stripe end because I considered incorporating Moses, but decided it didnt add anything to the effect. Will omit the laststripe on the other end so both dont end in the same colour, and knit the Nautilus stripe a bit wider to compensate.

If I take 2 days for section 4 and then a day for each remaining colour in section 5 and 6 and a day for each long border i will finish exactly on time.

25 march - done with Section 3. I’m adding an extra garter ridge to the remaining vertical black stripes and reducing all the panels by 2 ridges because Kim definitely doesn’t need any extra length. So this was 35 ridges.

23 March - done with the infernal white panel. It only has 25 garter ridges because I ran out of the ball of white and didn’t want to join another. I had 5.0g left after 24 ridges and 2.5g left after 25…pre-baby me would have totally tried for the 26th, but post-baby, knitting-on-a-deadline me called it good.

19 March - done with the center strip and picked up for the first white panel… on the wrong side. Bah. I’ll pick up again in the morning.

Making for a friend’s 50th birthday! A worsted weight scarf with a baby is one thing, a fingering weight scarf is quite another. But hopefully I’ll get it done in time.

I changed the colours a bit from my original plan, adding in Mont Blanc and treating Nautilus and Moses as one colour - I’ll use the Moses on the ends. The middle colour works best when it’s distinct from the two lighter and darker shades, I think.
