Notes

Love this design!

I am so happy that I made Meander in the Malabrigo. It is warm and soft, and the double knitting makes the scarf super thick and toasty.

This was my first time using the long-tail cast on, and so I didn’t understand that the cast on already puts a row of knitting on the needle. This means that if you follow the chart exactly, you end up with a three-row-thick color bar at the beginning of the scarf. To make everything balanced, I added an extra row at the end, but if I made this pattern again, I’d just start the chart at the second row.

I also didn’t follow the pattern’s method of double knitting. Chilson uses the variety of double knitting in which the two colors always alternate, but whether you knit first or purl first is determined by which color is in front. I prefer the texture produced by the method in which you always alternate knit and purl, and you knit the front color and purl the back color. To my eye, the first method seems better for a pattern with small blobs of foreground color against a field of background color, since it makes the colored regions pop out texturally. The second method seems to make a smoother fabric.

I tried adding the fringe, but I like the crispness of the scarf with unadorned ends.
