This is a pattern that matches my crazy well--intricate geometry in twisted garter on tiny needles. If your goal is to make a pair of socks, this might not be the pattern for you. If your goal is to make something beautiful and enjoy the process, dive in! The two-colored mitered squares are phenomenal, and I’m sure I will find an excuse to use them somewhere else.

I had some KPPPM left over from my overbuying for the Sunset Alligator Wrap. Ellen from Crazy for Ewe pointed me to this pattern, which was especially sweet of her given that the yarn isn’t from her shop. Of course, I had to tweak the pattern (another part of my crazy).

I wanted the side seams on both socks to point to the inside, and originally I was just planning to move the instep of the second sock from the right to the left. But it occurred to me that if I knit the second sock panel sideways, I would also mirror reverse the colors and rotate the grain of the knitting (hence the twisted posey), which seemed too interesting not to try. So for the second sock, I knit the mitered squares exactly as I did for the first, except that instead of knitting five columns of eight squares and five columns of four squares, I knit four columns of ten squares and four columns of five squares. The last photograph shows the two mitered square panels side by side.

If I can hold out, I may fold these up and stow them in the closet until next fall to enter them in the county fair before I dirty them by actually using them.

UPDATE: I did hold out, and they won the blue ribbon for socks. Woohoo!
