This cowl was a birthday present for my aunt Bärbel who lives in Glücksburg (a little town near the danish border)…hence the name: Glücksburg Cowl. I borrowed the cable pattern from Natalie Larson’s Star Crossed Slouchy Beret. With bulky yarn and 7mm needles a really quick knit!
If you’d like to knit one for yourself - here’s the pattern:
You need:
- 3 skeins (150 g) heavy worsted or bulky weight yarn. I used Lana Grossa “Alta Moda Cashmere” which has a airy chain structure, but you can use any yarn thats soft enough (for example Malabrigo Merino Worsted is really lovely too)
- Circular Needle 7.00 mm, 60cm long
- Cable Needle
- Stitch marker or safety pin (for marking the beginning of the round)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
14 sts = 10 cm in stockinette
Finished size:
Approx. 33 cm wide and 42 cm long
Abbrevations:
k1 = knit one stitch
p1 = purl one stitch
sl 1 = slip one stitch knitwise
st = stitch
cn = cable needle
Instructions:
Co 132 sts, join in the round. Place marker at the beginning of the round (slip marker with the beginning of every new round).
Begin with 3x3 rib: -k3, p3- rep from-
When ribbing is 5 cm long, switch to cable pattern:
Round 1-4: Knit
Round 5: -Sl 3 sts to cn, hold to back, k3, k3 from cn, k5- repeat from-
Round 6-10: Knit
Round 11: -k5, sl 3 sts to cn, hold to front, k3, k3 from cn- repeat from-
Round 12: Knit
Repeat rounds 1-12 until you reach the desired length, ending with a round 3 or 9.
Work 5 cm 3x3 rib. Cast off in pattern. Weave in loose ends. Block lightly if desired.
Enjoy!
