To make the potholder I made a front and a back, working the pattern through round 5 for each piece. I then placed the two pieces back-to-back with wrong sides together and joined them by working round 6 through both pieces. Using aran weight yarn this makes a substantially thick potholder. Batting could be added between the layers if desired.
To make the coaster I worked rounds 1 and 2 as written and then skipped to round 6 working in the ch-2 spaces from round 2.
I started out making the potholder working round 2 as 5-stitch bobbles (because that is what was demonstrated in the video link at the beginning of the pattern in the Stitches Used section and because nowhere in the written pattern is it specified). It was very crowded and would not lay flat, so I ripped back and reworked the round using 4-stitch bobbles. Something in my brain kept nagging me that this was supposed to be a 3-stitch bobble, but I ignored the voice in my head and plowed forward. It wasn’t until after I had completed the potholder that I decided to watch the video at the end of the pattern instructions where, sure enough, a 3-stitch bobble is used. Had I done the bobbles correctly in the potholder I would have had enough yarn left over to make a second coaster. I’m a little annoyed that I made this mistake at all because I have made this pattern multiple times before and did it correctly with 3-stitch bobbles. (Hello, little nagging voice…) In fact, one of these coasters sits under my coffee cup literally every single day.
The potholder used 46.5 gm (81.4 yds/74.4 m).
The coaster used 9.5 gm (16.6 yds/15.2 m).
