Working Gauge (3.5mm): 20 st & 30 rows = 10 cm
Blocked Gauge (3.5 mm):21 sts & 28 rows = 10 cm
KAL with the lovely Jennifer! This is the first of my 2013 Rhineback sweaters.
I’ve been smitten with this pattern since it’s release and am very pleased with the finished piece. It fits just as I had hoped & I’m thrilled with the military-style garter stitch shoulders. Amy has a fantastic eye for detail.
I elected to knit this piece at a tighter gauge to achieve a closer fit (~34.5” bust) & for extra warmth (this will serve as a light jacket rather than a cardigan). I also omitted the button bands sts while knitting the body & instead picked up sts along the center fronts with the smaller needle & made vertical garter button bands. Similarly I knit the collar with the smaller needle.
Lastly I did not knit the sleeves seperately, but instead picked up sts along the armhole & shaped the shoulder with short-rows as noted below;
Sleeves
-picked up 60sts beginning at center shoulder, 1 st in from edge, using 2 mm needles (thank you for the tip Jennifer!) then transferred sts to gauge needles
-knit 7 sts past centre shoulder marker, turn work &, using japanese short row technique, purl to 7 sts past centre marker, turn work
-continue working japanese short-rows until 5 sts from from underarm marker, ending w/ a WS rows & working 1 final short-row
-turn work & knit to underarm marker, picking-up the loop & knitting it with the next stitch to close the gap when encountered
-work 1 round even picking up the final loop & working it with the preceeding stistch to close the gap
-knit 24 rounds even, knit 1 decrease round (k1, k2tog, knit to 3 sts from end, ssk, k1)
-#knit 14 rounds, knit 1 decrease round; repeat from #5 more times; 48 sts remain
-knit 9 rounds, knit 1 decrease round
-knit 4 rounds, knit 1 decrease round; 44 sts remain
-change to smaller needles & work 19 rounds in garter st, beginning & ending w/ a purl round; knit 1 decrease round; work 19 rounds in garter starting & ending w/ a purl round; BO knit-wise (total 20 garter ridges)
Button band
-picked up 100 sts with smaller needles; knit 9 rows in garter st; BO on RS using sewn bind-off
-used this tutorial for the bottonholes - very pleased with the results & will definitely use it again!
