My poor husband and his large manly feet. He does not get near enough hand knit socks. Being a huge Dr Who fan though, I just had to knit him socks with the Time Traveler colorway from Knit Picks.
There were a few false starts as I tested gauge and then cast on a huge number of stitches only to rip back and start again with a repeat or two fewer.
The pattern is great for start and stop knitting, as well as tv knitting, since there are only “pattern” rows every 8 or so rows. The rest are the knit and purl in pattern variety.
I broke the yarn when resuming in the round after the heel turn, so that the stripe sequence would be continued properly on the top of the foot.
If I made this again I would likely use a different increase instead of picking up the bar, because it does make a hole. I didn’t feel like starting over again with this sock though, so I just did the increase as instructed.
1st sock completed 2/12
My gauge 9.5 sts/inch & 14-14.5 rows/inch
Jeff’s foot length 11 1/8” & 10 1/2” around
Pattern notes to fit his foot:
Cast on 96 stitches
Knit 2 full repeats of leg chart (64 rows)
Heel flap = 48 rows
Setup row for heel flap
1) Sl 1, K29, SSK, K1, turn
2) Sl 1, P13, P2Tog, P1, turn
Work as instructed ending on wrong side w/ 30 sts
Picked up 25 sts per side of the gusset & reduced back down to 96 total.
On the foot pattern I changed the setup row of the chart to start & end with a purl instead of P2Tog, worked the rest of the chart as written
Worked 3 repeats of the foot chart (97 rows)
Toe 1st 11 rows the same, then repeated rows 10 & 11 five times (56 sts)
Repeat row 10 only eight times (24 sts)
Arrange 12 stitches per needle and graft sole and instep together.
