Scraps of all colors for petals (15 yd each) and centers (5 yd each)

09-22-14: Made the Purple-bordered yellow pansy & leaves (2nd photo). The block following the pattern has an open back, where the center of pansy shows through. I made a solid block as follows:

Leaf modification:
After making the third hdc in the last st of the foundation ch: ch-4 picot, (dc in next st, ch-4 picot) 3 times, hdc, ch-3 picot, sc in last, sl st to 1st sc, ch 1, cut yarn and pull end through lp. This will be the outer tip of the leaf.

About the afghan:
From the time I was able to toddle, Nana would take me out in the early spring and late fall and we’d pick pansies and float them in a bowl of water. She’d say either, “look, each one looks like a pretty lady wearing a fancy bonnet”, or, “Each one has a cute little face in the middle. No two are exactly alike, like people.” I remember being so fascinated by that, and from then on, they have always been my favorite flower, too.

Nana crocheted afghans for everyone but never made one for herself, so when she was 82 I crocheted the afghan (see pattern link above, “Pretty Pansies”) for her. Every pansy was a different color combination (“no two exactly alike”). I embroidered a message on the bottom border “To my beautiful Nana, who taught me that pansies are special because they are all different, and so it is with people”. She was covered with it every day until she died, asking that the bottom border be at the head so she could read it and would finger the words. She asked to be buried with it. I wish I had taken a picture of it.
