This project will just be describing the knitting of the vest. If I decide to do the panties as well, I’ll create another project for that.
The pattern calls for a very long vest. I will shorten mine some. Instead of a 22 inch seam I will aim for approx. 16 inches. I am also knitting my vest in the round.
The lace bit had me frustrated until I realised there’s an error in the pattern. It has repeats of 12 stitches + 2, whereas the pattern instructions says to cast on 120 stitches for front and 120 stitches for back, which leaves 2 stitches missing from both.
This means that if you knit it flat (back and front separately) you’ll need to cast on 122 stitches for both pieces, otherwise the lace pattern doesn’t fit in.
If you knit the vest in the round you don’t have to add stitches as you can go straight to the pattern repeats which will then add up nicely.
The entire lace pattern including the shaping of the points at the top of the vest are written for a 122 stitches cast on. If you are knitting the top in the round using 120 stitches per side you’ll have to cast off 3 stitches at the start of the shaping of the under arm area instead of 4.
Final measurements of garment:
Bust: 36
Waist: 26
Hips: 32
This is a very very comfy undervest. It has quite a lot of negative ease, but as I suspected it is so elastic it would easily fit someone quite larger than me, probably at least 4 inches larger all over. So next time i make this I will aim for a smaller size. I also think it would work better with a firmer finish, perhaps use a yarn with more twist such as drops baby merino, and smaller needles.
