1898 HAT PATTERN NOTES
The construction of this hat was inspired by one pictured in a magazine published around 1910. Knitting the headband side to side provides a double layer of garter stitch to keep the ears warm, and allows for easy shaping of the earflaps. The edges of the headband are folded together along a slipped stitch seam, and picked up together to finish in the round. The hat has plenty of depth so it can be pulled low on the forehead, and the earflaps will naturally cup around the ears to keep them warm.

For the Revive-a-Vintage “contest” I pledge 3 of these projects (hats)by April 15th which will be donated to Christmas at Sea. This is #3. Here are #1 and #2. These are extremely popular with the Seamen who are in such need of warm, comfortable, practical hats. The pattern is very clever in construction.

This is Hat #3 of my Goal of 10 for their annual drive.

I am planning to add some subtle striping to this hat with a second color of “Swish”.
-
As in the prior hats, I am adding a mod of reducing the crown a little quicker, and eliminating the “plain knit” round after K6, K2tog. I reduced at every row after that point. This cut back on the slight “point ” on the top.
