Cheryl Patzer
Manitoba, Canada.
Short, hot summers and long, cold, dry winters. Endless prairie skies. Fields of canola, flax, wheat, barley. Aspen parkland and coniferous forests. Outcroppings of Canadian Shield. Fast, flowing rivers and vast, still lakes. Snow covered fields the same colour as the sky so that you can not tell where the sky begins and the field ends. Northern lights whistling as they dance across the sky. Wild blueberries and saskatoons so sumptuous that you wait all year for the brief picking season.
This is my inspiration.
To me, this translates to endless stockinette that has outcroppings of lace peaking through. Twisting, stout cables that provide warmth as they wrap around. A light, airy look of lace with a tightly woven knit underlay that provides a stylish but sensible garment. Loose, flowing garments that are meant to be layered for extra warmth in the long winter months, but that can be worn on their own in the brief summer season. Patterns with elements that are simple on the surface, but contain complex beauty when examined further.
I am currently working on the Manitoba Collection – an assortment of patterns that are inspired by various places throughout the province of Manitoba.
