The BobbleWrap Bag is a cute and funky bobble-textured bag, fun to knit and fun to carry (one pattern tester said it’s “like walking around with bubble wrap”).

The pattern comes with instructions for either knitting a strap or attaching a separate strap with knitted tabs and contains a link to instructions for lining the bag. It contains a chart as well as instructions for the oval bottom of the purse to help show where your increases should fall as well as pictures of the bag in progress to illustrate crucial steps. It uses U.S. terminology.

This pattern is a knitted version of Charissa Pray’s crocheted The Cobblestone Handbag, developed in cooperation with her.

Gauge is not very important for this pattern, but it should be relatively tight for bulky/super bulky yarn (or worsted yarn held double), generally achieved by using a needle size about two sizes smaller than the yarn’s label suggests. Finished bags are about 7 inches tall (not including the handle/strap) and 10.5 inches wide when flattened. The knitted strap is about 23 inches long. Your size may vary depending on yarn used and your tension, and can be adjusted by adding or removing rounds of bobble stitch.

Pattern can be made with bulky or super bulky yarn held single or with worsted weight yarn held double. For a version with a separate strap, it requires about 300-350 yards bulky yarn or 425-450 yards worsted yarn. For a version with a knitted strap, it requires about 350-400 yards bulky yarn or 650-700 yards worsted yarn. A two-tone bag in bulky yarn would require about 140 yards of one color and about 130 yards of a contrast color (including a knitted strap in the contrast color). Your yardage will vary depending on yarn weight and whether you knit a strap or attach a purse handle.

Tools:

  • US Size 10 / 6mm 40”/100cm circular knitting needle
  • 1 stitch marker
  • 2 stitch holders
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery scissors
  • Tape measure

Materials:

  • Bulky or super bulky weight yarn (300-400 yards), or worsted weight yarn held double (425-700 yards) - For a bag with bobbles that pop out and stay there, use a relatively stiff and dense yarn with some roughness or “stick” to its texture so that it holds onto itself and doesn’t want to let go.

  • A button

  • Optional: fabric for lining bag, less than a yard

  • Optional: purse handle
