What is that hole for? Maybe below is answer?
The smaller hole in the table on the side towards the spinner is for a reeling pin. They are shown in Pennington & Taylor’s book in the section under PA wheels. The long tapered pin has a top to grasp that sometimes echoes the finials on the maidens and extends below the table coming to a point. It was to aid in winding off the linen thread onto the skein winder. According to P & T the reeling pin appeared sometime after 1820 and seems to be exclusive to Southeastern PA.

The last photo shows chip carving (?) on the slant board.
