Notes

As a Game of Thrones fan, I considered calling these mitts Winter is Coming, but living on the Oregon Coast, though wet, winter really is not that bad. It’s pretty mild actually.

That’s why this pattern is perfect in fact. I love short fingered mitts … and I had a couple solo skeins left in my older sock yarn basket. This cute pattern is perfect for them. I hike the Amanda Trail at Cape Perputua regularly … it’s often windy and quite damp in the forest above the ocean … these gloves will be perfect there.

Skein labels are long gone. They weren’t anything fancy … Possibly the lightest shade is a Paton’s Kroy, maybe, and I’m just not sure on the darker brown. They have both worked up well in this pattern.

Swatched first with US #3 needles, then US #2-1/2 … but ended up going down to US #2 to get a nice fabric and good fit. I have very small hands and wrists, though average length fingers … If you have regular sized hands, the size #3 needles might be a perfect fit.

Made a few mods … Worked the cuff ribbing as 2 X 2 rather than 2 X 1 - just because I personally like that look better. Also did not work the two extra rows after, nor set aside, the sts for the pinky. Maybe it’s my hands, but the beginning of my fingers are pretty much straight across rather than staggered, and I’ve just never noticed a difference in the fit to justify working that tiny detail in my glove construction. So being Rose the lazy girl, by not putting those stitches on waist yarn, I was able to quickly work all of the fingers beginning with the pinky sequentially through to the index finger right off my 9” circs.

Except for the first row of thumb gusset increases, I worked my preferred method of kf&b rather than picking up the bar between sts and knitting through the back loop … simply because I like the look of gusset increases made that way.

I also omitted the CC rib along the length of the fingers. A lovely detail, but my personal preference is smoothness rather than ribs in the fingers. Fingers and thumbs are all worked 10 rows MC, 2 rows K1, P1 CC rib, followed by pwise BO. This put all finger length right where I like it at the middle joint.

I’m very pleased with the fit of these gloves. An outdoor photographer, these short fingered gloves are my favorite. With enough coverage for warmth and the convenience of free fingers for working the camera, I love them.
