Started these mittens right after the pattern was first published in 2007, but went through a rough knitting burn out, followed by three intense semesters of graduate school. Came back to the unfinished first mitt the second week of August, 2010.

August 14, 2010: Finished first mitt.

August 17, 2010: During a long lecture, made it past the cast-on, ribbing, two twined herringbone, and most of the first chart when I realized that my ROW gauge was 2/3 that of the first glove. I must be yanking the heck out of the yarn. It would fit a first grader.

Put it down to rethink my options. Still love the yarns. Still love the pattern. Think I’m going to have to rip out completely and start over with size 2 needles.

Decided to do what I am doing with Max’s Christmas socks--starting both mittens simultaneously, working for an inch or two on one, then switching to the other. For these fingerless mitts, I’ll switch back and forth between each mitt after each chart.

Off to rewind yarn. I hope to cast on both pairs tonight while watching my son’s 3rd performance in Much Ado.

August 25: Almost done with one mitten. The other is at about the 50% mark. I am soooo glad I opted to start over. The new mitten has a much better fit and is going quite quickly this time around. I expect to finish the set by the end of the weekend.

August 29: Completed, washed, and blocked. They’re drying now. New pictures posted tomorrow evening. Extremely satisfying to finish such an old UFO. Even have some yarn left over :)
