I had a vision of a Snapping Turtle Skirt made of the red Artistic yarn that had been lying in my stash. I started working on it wondering if I have enough yarn and if I’d be able to figure out the correct size with a different weight yarn…
After some extensive calculations it seems I managed to start with exactly the right sized hexagons (26 stitches per side on the first row), and I love how it turned out. I left the stockinette side as the right side because I like it better than the reverse stockinette, but still kept the seams on the right side as in the pattern.
Unfortunately I ran out of yarn when only 2,5 hexagons were missing… To finish it, I had to raid strilla’s yarn chest and get the missing yards from her similar skein. Her yarn was a little bit thicker than mine although according to the label they were exactly the same weight. I fudged the remaining two hexagons as best I could and hopefully nobody can tell the difference now. At least the colour matches exactly.
Weaving in the five million ends (actually there were 67, give or take a few) wasn’t as big a chore as I had anticipated. I guess it was because I had already accepted that it would take forever, so finishing in a couple of nights felt like a victory. Also the yarn was so easy to work with that I didn’t get frustrated with hiding the ends.
I decided to replace the zipper with hooks because I don’t like attaching zippers. Don’t ask me how it would have been any less work than sewing in hooks… But at least they’re prettier than a zipper - they match the skirt very well.
