This is a FANTASTIC gift from hubby and I have spent the week playing in all these lovely colors.
I decided to store the yarn balls in alphabetical order. 16 skeins fit perfectly in an Aldi’s box (which previously held 6 canisters of oats). Ten boxes holds all 150 colors, with some excess space in the last box.
Next I created a table in Word and inserted each color name, to make a little cardboard bobbin for each color (just like the embroidery floss cards).
Printed the 5 pages on regular printer paper.
I used spray adhesive to glue each of 5 file folders closed (to double the thin card stock), then I glued the printed sheet to each folder..
There were grid lines for the basic rectangle. I made a one column “pattern” to trace the bobbin shape. Then I cut each column (strip) on the cutting board, traced the bobbin shape, cut the shapes on each strip by hand and then back to the cutting board to free each individual bobbin.
As luck would have it, we had some plastic trays/boxes which were given, brand new, to hubby a couple years ago. I wound a bit of yarn (about 1.5 yards) around each bobbin. Now I can play with the colors till I get the color combo I want and then go find the skeins in my stash.
I think this system is going to work really well (says she who is just beginning to look at color work).
I would love to know how other people store/catalog/manage a multitude of colors.
I am one happy girl!
