Note: if you click on the image of the chart in the pattern, a new window pops up and you can print a much more clear and larger image of the chart.

Using US 7 and 5 - my row gauge is 3 less rows per 4 inches - so my vest will be 6 rows longer than the pattern. That’s fine - it will fit him longer and he’s a good size boy and will be 2 years old next month.

Based on my gauge swatch with this yarn and needles, I don’t think I’ll need to compensate for cable flare. It looks like going down a couple needle sizes for the ribbing, as suggested in the pattern, will take care of it.

Using a US 5 and a pickup rate of 4/5 for the armhole ribbing gave me the nicest looking ribbing. Pick up and knit armhole stitches (on right side) … and then knit one row (on wrong side) - begin k1p1 ribbing for three rows and bind off.

I’m changing the direction of the cable in the central pattern to match the direction of the cables in row 4.

Mirror cables on right and left of vest.

Start at row 17, but substitute row 21-24 -then go back to row 21 and complete the chart.

This eliminates the partial “y” at the bottom center of the vest front and elongates that portion of the cable to make it more visually appealing.

8/20 - finally ready to cast on. Enough pondering the pattern. In we go!
8/24 - finished the front. Lovely pattern - but note that the right front shoulder shaping is wrong - I reversed the left shoulder shaping.

8/24Started the back of vest. Will do the side panel all the way across and omit the center panel.

notes to myself in working my first V neck ribbing:
I was not happy with the hole at the base of the V when I picked up as suggested in directions. Ripped out the ribbing. Tried many variations on a swatch and settled on this:

When picking up the stitches: work the first central double decrease in the unworked stitches, which closes up the hole.

After pickup round,
Round 1: purl one round to define the ribbing (ala Beth Brown Reinsel). But, I did knit the center three stitches of the V.

Round 2: rib to the center three stitches, and work a central double decrease (slip two together knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over)

Round 3: Work one round in rib w/o the decrease.

Round 4: Work a decrease round.

Round 5: work one round in rib w/o the decrease.

Bind off: Bind off in pattern, including a central double decrease in the bindoff.

I’ll be on the lookout for a better way to work the V … but this little sweater needs to get done - gifting is on Sunday and I have a little dress I made for his sister, Lilly.
