Notes

Another historic challenge. The Museum of London has a picture online of a child’s vest. The construction of the vest has been under debate, and I want to see if I can figure it out.

I am using my own hand spun yarn (on my wheel named Bonnie--important in case I have to spin more) at 12-13 wpi, using Cohaven Cream fleece. Size 2 (US) needles to get presumed gauge between 6-8 spi. 216 cast on.

--216 was way too many stitches. Ended up 144.

I did need more yarn, but luckily found some that matched well enough squirreled away in my bin. This little shirt looks rough, but the construction seems to be working well.

OK, I got it done. Made it out of handspun, roughly 12-13 wpi, pretty dense yarn. Looks like it will fit my 18 month old granddaughter, so I’ll get her to model it for pictures on Sunday. I did not put the slit down the back, since it obviously was cut, not worked, and I’m pretty sure I got the construction right. Couldn’t quite tell if I should decrease (miter) at the neckline, but it flared terribly when I didn’t, so I did a rip and re-knit with decreases at the inner corners. Looks right. To me…..so, when I post pics, it would be great to get some feed-back. It seems like a rather uncomfortable shirt on the surface, but when I got down to handling it, it looks like it would work. And, if it were done on long double points, the finishing would look just like the paintings of the Madonna knitting. Really, really simple--sometimes I think we just make complications where there aren’t any…….lesson learned.

Pictures of the granddaughter are up, she’s wearing the replica of the Museum of London Child’s Vest. It works much better on her than I thought it would. So. very. simple. Occam’s razor, I guess. But she’s much cuter!;)
