Even though have finished Hobbes just in time for my son’s 25th birthday, will re-do his facial features at some point. Will then add the head stripes.

After a bit of research about which pattern to use and a few videos, finally started. Will crochet the character Hobbes as it is in Calvin’s mind, not the plush toy he actually is - longer body, facial expression (rounder nose, separate smiling mouth) shorter legs, longer arms, white inner ear, black tip at end of tail:

Body
maybe I crochet too tightly, but diameter of body with 60 stitches did not look wide enough, so increased to 66 at row 11. Measured 11cm in diameter after increase. Then continued as per pattern from row 12. Then about half way along the length of the body, I decreased stitches back to 60. I added 5 extra stripes to make the body longer to reflect proportions in the cartoon (see link above).

Belly
Longer to match body. It extends down to about second stripe from start of rounds right up to the neck and top of body.

Muzzle, eyes and nose
Made muzzle longer to look like Hobbes in cartoon. Crocheted around muzzle edge with a smaller 3mm hook.
Both eyes and nose, purchased from Spotlight fabric store, will be sewn on to the white part of muzzle. Added tiger eyes. (xxxxxxTiger eyes were originally attached to an oval crochet piece in black to resemble Hobbes oval eyes, but they didn’t look right. Used 3mm hook and crochet 6 chain. Then single chain from second chain along top, then continue around bottom of chain. Repeat sc around one more time so there is enough of an oval background, larger then eye.xxxxc)

Arms
Will use notes from JEMCCreations. Just like with body, made arms longer to more resemble cartoon character.

Legs
Sewn on to body at same angle as that part of the white belly and slightly oval. Underfilled at top of leg so can sit Hobbes down.

Assembly and sewing
Used safety pins to keep items in place whilst sewing, as suggested by xxx. Used backstick a few mm from edge to sew on parts rather than overstitch over edge.

Scarf
4mm needle

Taking forever to crochet this. Finished body, head, 2 legs. Still need to do underbelly, arms, muzzle, tail, ears, facial features, then sew it all together by son’s birthday on 2 August.
