Crochet chain for provisional cast on say 65, and use 60. Then pick up bump from other side 1 row of knit, then one row of purl. Refer Joannes Web video link below. Alternatively see video using circular needles.
Odd rows are WS, Even rows are RS
Rows 1 - 6 are purls in black as a ridge that stands out (MC)
Rows 7 - 12 are Stockinette in red that fade into background (CC)
From other Ravellers, the number of stitches cast on determine the length of hat. The number of repeats (rows 1-12) determine the width of hat.
After the first row of the hat, change row 1 from knit to purl, to prevent the MC garter bumps from showing.
Ten repeats of pattern (each of 12 rows).
Refer olszc tips for picking up stitches for brim
Brim
Changed to 4mm needle and picked up 118 sts for knitting in the round (12 rows X number of repeats (10) = 120/118. Continued in 1x1 rib. Wearer’s head circumference 57cm.
2/3 needle bind off
As per monicarose51 will “worked a three-needle bind-off except I only needed two needles since I had done a regular cast-on. I held the two ends with right sides facing and inserted my working needle into the back loop of the first cast-on st and then into the first st on the left hand needle and knit together. Continued across the row binding off as usual.
3 needle bind off is done from the WS? Therefore a purl not a knit bind off!

3 needle bind off - finish on row 11?

See spinningtoknit for closing the hole at the top neatly “ No hole in the top! The secret is in how you gather the top. Working from the right side, I ran the yarn needle through the edge purl bumps only for each outside ridge (white), pushed the yellow areas to the back and cinched up, ran through a second time, pulled tight and took the needle to the inside. On the inside I ran the needle through the inside (yellow) purl bumps only and cinched up, tightened a few stitches and finished off. Think 2 layers and finish off separately. This does not make a double layer because the ridges alternate and meh together.”
