I learnt to crochet so I could make this skirt. Before that I was only a knitter. This was the second crochet item I attempted after going to a beginners class where we learnt to crochet a granny square. I am really pleased with this skirt. The instructions were easy to follow and there were lots of pictures and links to videos to help me navigate the pattern. I haven’t worn it yet except for taking these photos as I want to enter it into the crafts section of the local agricultural show.
Might incorporate star stitch -don’t think I used this in the end https://crochetmissy.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/test-strips...

Whilst waiting for yarn to arrive, practising on a swatch.
Rows 2 and 3 - Griddle stitch https://youtu.be/ijjxcV0TCPg
Row 6 - Half double crochet (UK half treble crochet) in back loops of row 4. Think it might mean something like into third loop in back https://youtu.be/d2nyqJZBfvA
Also swatching using different techniques for casting on, as well as different hook sizes. The 10 ply cotton yarn calls for 4.5mm but that is too open, so tried 4mm and 3.5mm. Ended up using 3.5mm. This cotton is not like a 10 ply wool yarn.
Trying foundation chain versus foundation row. See photo. The foundation chain resulted in a neater look than the foundation row using this video here https://youtu.be/8pkADI3QI6M
Not sure I am very good with my tension and crochet technique yet, being a beginner. It’s also been a while since I used cotton yarn.
Started with 160 stitches, increased to 170 for hips, then decreased to 160.
Finished with the final 3 row stitch type as recommended (sc, ch1, miss a stitch) however it made the skirt hem width a bit too narrow and too tight when walking in a hurry, as well as getting in and out of the car(!). Tried a swatch with larger hook size, but didn’t look right. Have unravelled and used griddle stitch (alternate single crochet, double crochet) for 3 rows. Quite a tight stitch, though not as good as recommended. Might rethink and have another try. The beauty of crochet is being able to unravel without having to worry about live stitches. So much easier than knitting. Will also need to tighten waist elastic.
Very happy with pattern. Instructions included photos with row labels for the various stitches which helped a lot, especially for a beginner like me. I recommend this skirt pattern.
