This is an adaptation of the Autumn Leaves Afghan by Caron Design, replacing the sc with the Diagonal Box Stitch. The version I am using has 6 ch for the increases with 3 dc in the “box”,as per the Diagonal Box Stitch Square 6x6 pattern. The sc in the original Caron Design pattern created a rather stiff, heavier fabric, while the Diagonal Box stitch fabric is much softer, lighter weight and floppy, more suitable to the subtropical climate here and making it a delight to cuddle under on cooler nights.
I am still undecided about final colors, but will be definitely using the Off White 275 background Main Color with leaf motifs in Turkey Red 232 and a Burnt Orange and will choose whether I go with Camel or a more defined brown like Chocolate or Taupe when I get to that stage, probably sometime in February 2017.
The images posted here so far are my test squares to see if the pattern works in the Diagonal Box Stitch. Not yet sewn together for the 1st complete leaf motif. Each square takes under an hour to crochet while the 9-square Leaf motif takes roughly 2 days (of my time) to complete.
I can see potential using this approach in other patterns that can adapt to the Patchwork style 9-patch designs. The Box Stitch is also a good way to create Pixel-based pictorial crochet works.
140417 - join of 12 motif squares completed. The Diagonal box stitch gives the rug an airy textural feel, perfect companion for the afternoon siesta as we head into Autumn. Now devising border.
160417 - See last pic. 3-chain shell edging. A quick easy simple edging: sc.* 3ch., slst in sp between boxes* around with extra 3ch, slst. on corners. Done in 2 hours. Repeats the 3ch part of the box motif. Could have added a 3-col strong border, using the chains as a “hanger” for rows of boxes. But I like the simplicity of the 3-chain shells ; it lets the big ripply Maple Leaves be the heroes, with no other visual interference.
