This is a well written and well constructed pattern.
The hat band is knit at the same time as creating the stitches for the body, so that there is no need to pick up those stitches when you are finished with the band and grafting. It is both clever construction, and smart construction, reducing the number of ends to weave in, and the amount of work to create a final product.
