I decided to make a narrower version of this wonderful pattern as a scarf, rather than as the original square. I cast on a total of 46 stitches (23 pairs) and am followed the chart as given without any horizontal repeats.

My finished scarf is 5” x 58”, and includes 17 vertical repeats of the chart.
