Dec 21, 2021: It was an Aug 27, 2014 article titled Heritage Week, or, the proximity of socks and fish by Jane Suzanne Carroll scholarmonkey that got me interested in vintage sock heels and toes. I wanted to make each of them, one by one. Her pattern is:
Archives and Old Lace Balbriggan Harbour Socks
The two other patterns with this heel are:
Nancy Bush Folk Socks St Peter Port Stripes, and,
Lara Neel Bootstrap Socks.
Weldon’s Practical Stocking Knitter First Series provides instructions for making this heel on page 6:
“This heel is rounded a little more than either of the foregoing examples (referring to the Common or Square Heel and the Manufacturer’s Heel), and to shape it nicely will require 5 stitches more than the exact half of the number of stitches in the round.”
If you don’t knit a seam st, that will be 4 extra sts on the heel compared to the instep. I will be knitting the Bootstrap Sock pattern by Lara Neel where she ignores these extra 4 sts altogether. She works the heel flap on half the number of sts only.
My Socks - Sept 24, 2022.
I am following Lara Neel’s instructions for the Balbriggan heel in the book Sock Architecture. It uses onlt half of the total sts for the heel, instead of the half + 4 suggested in Weldon’s.
GTCO 68 sts on US 1.5 (2.5mm) needles. Transferred to US 1 (2.25mm) for the cuff and body. Knit leg for 6.25” and heel flap (on 68/2 = 34 sts) for 2.25”. On hindsight, 66 sts would have been better.
Turned heel as per pattern. I made the Medium Wide Toe but reduced sts until 16 remained. I liked the fit of the toe better this way. My row gauge is tighter than the pattern gauge and so the toe decreases only added 1-5/8 inch to the length of the sock.
Measurements:
Leg: 6.25” (20 rows of cuff and 60 rows of pattern)
Heel Flap: 2.25” (28 rows)
Foot: 68 rows before toe decreases.
Heel to Toe: 9”, unstretched, unblocked.
Comments: I love this heel. I can see why it was Queen Victoria’s favorite! The heel has a lovely cupped snug fit. The yarn is soft and great to work with. However, because of its silk content does not stretch vertically much at all. So, I had to knit until the heel-to-toe measure was 9” to fit my 9.5” long foot! Very happy with the project. I worked the sock with 68sts but 66 would have been plenty.
