Sept 25, 2017: German Twisted cast on 96 on US #4 needles. Started with a round of purls. Using Helix knitting technique with two skeins of Amazing Mesa. I read about the technique on the following project pages:
Woollythistle’s Helix Rikkes, and, shanacronin’s Rikke Hat.
I followed this video by Sockmatician to do my helix knitting. The only difference is that instead of working with two yarns in different colors I had two yarns from two skeins of the same color. I used one only for the knit rows and the other only for the purl rows. I did not work any slip stitches at the end of a row.
Switched to US #7 ChiaoGoo Lace needles after the first 15 garter ridges. Knit garter st until the hat measured 6.75 inches from the cast on row.
Switched to US #6 Addi circulars for the decrease section. At the end I threaded both yarns (the one from the knit rows and the one from the purl rows) through the remaining 16 sts and wove in the ends.
Very happy with the hat. It’s easy and very functional.
Here is a very useful article by MasonDixon Knitting about helix knitting using 4 dpns and for garter stitch (and other two row patterns) in the round. It involves slipping 3 sts at the end of the round.
Here is a video by Jen Arnall-Culliford on helix knitting for color stripes on magic loop that eliminates the jog. It involves slipping stitches too.
I don’t yet fully understand the difference in the two helix knitting techniques above - one that slips 3 sts at the end of the round and one that does not. But I hope to find out someday. If anyone reading this knows the answer can you please pm me? Thanks!
