This will be a Babette-inspired blanket with solid squares. I wanted to try and make my own design for it.

I’d selected these colors but had no clue what type of blanket I wanted to make. I didn’t want to go for lots of multicolor grannies because I knew it would mean I wouldn’t finish in good time or even at all, having to weave in all those ends and stitch them all together. I also wasn’t look for the grid look (all the same size squares). I looked through loads of blanket patterns and projects to find the right blanket for what I wanted to do with these colors. I had ideas that I liked at first but then started to doubt.

Then I found that babette, and I decided to go for it.

I made a design on my computer because using only 5 colors, if you’re just winging it, you’re bound to get stuck at some point if you don’t want the same colors squares touching.

I’ll be using this tutorial by Wool n Hook for seaming the squares together. I considered joining as you go but I think I prefer this, I tried it on the first two squares and it looks really nice. I will be stitching squares together as I’m going so I don’t have to do all the stitching afterwards.

Mods: I reduced the number of CH at the start of a round by 1, so if it was 5ch, I do 4, for 7ch, I do 6. This looks more consistent in my case.

July 2014: Finished! It took a while (cough) but here it is. I suddenly got the spirit again to work on this blanket (I don’t know for the life of me why I get the urge to do blankets during the hottest weeks of the year….) I did a DC edge, one row creme and 4 rows burgundy, I basically did a row just like the squares are done, I did 2 DC in each corner I found on the first round, seems this might have been a bit too much, I think it would work if the yarn is all the same but the red seems a bit thicker and softer than the rest, so the edge is a little ruffly, but I was ready for it to be done so I didn’t redo, it’s nice, I like it, it’s a perfect blanket to cover yourself with on the couch on a chilly night. Noah, one of my ginger boys, claimed the blanket while in progress and it’s now his favorite for lying on in my lap :)
