I had a book of christening gowns to crochet but I realized they used thread. I didn’t want to go that route since it would likely take me too long to finish (although it would have been beautiful). I decided to use the same look of one of the gowns in the book but adapt it for the pearlized baby yarn.
I also added pearl beads by threading them on the yarn before I began and sliding them up onto the stitch as I went. I used ribbon with roses sewn onto it around the bodice and at the center front. After seeing several gowns in catalogs with crosses embroidered on them, I improvised a fancy cross for the center (my favorite part of the gown) and also two smaller crosses from the drop ribbons. The skirt I made very long for a dramatic effect giving it what I feel to be an heirloom quality. I also improvised the picot edgings. Really enjoyed making this for my baby girl and I hope to pass it on to her for her baby.
I am thinking of making a new christening outfit for my infant son, Caleb, as well. It will likely be more boyish but I have yet to research the design or pattern. Should be fun!
