Hard to believe I haven’t seen a link to a garter tab cast on tutorial in project notes! Here’s the one I’m using: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaQHMmEIvgU (Stuff like this makes me feel like I must be the only newb knitter on Ravelry sometimes!)
10/20 UPDATE: Took this with me on a 3-day getaway to Tybee Island and almost finished all of the stripes! Just a couple dozen stitches short of the 3rd to last row, I ran out of Color B. No worries, though -- I bought 2 skeins, and that’s going to be PLENTY. I also have high hopes that the color difference won’t be too great.
Back when I was working Color A, I was worried that 1 skein wouldn’t be enough, so I did alternating rows with a different skein of Solis. I’m not sure at this point how much I used in total (if it was more than one skein or not), but I’ll be weighing it to check so that I can update my stash.
Color C had a little bit leftover. Enough to work with on a hat or pair of mitts to go with this shawl once I’m done.
The pattern itself… well, the K1P1 through YOs was a pain in the butt. And P2Tog TBL was also less than fun. I was uncertain about the big holes… and still am, but I’m keeping an open mind until it’s off the needles and blocked.
It’s really heavy. I love the colors, though, so hopefully it won’t end up banished to the FO drawer and never seen again!
BIND-OFF UPDATE: 10/22/14 -- a little after midnight, and I really should be long asleep, but you know how it goes when you’re that close to binding off… And then I had to hold it up and stretch it out and squoosh it up again and bury my face in it… So my initial impression -- I’m still not thrilled with the holes in the pattern. They make it look really raggedy. And I know that weaving in ends will make a big difference on that front, but still -- I’m thinking that skinny minnies can get away with wearing raggy, weedy garments -- but on those of us with more plush proportions, it just makes us look like bag ladies.
So I’m going to sleep on it, let it simmer a bit. I’m still not completely beyond frogging it and using the yarn for something else. But the yarn would probably get pretty gnarly in the process.
Letting the jury sit and ponder this one awhile.
