MODIFIED PATTERN
Used this pattern as a base and modified it to match the baby sweater pattern that I made (Bailyn’s first sweater - a.k.a. Seamless Yoked Baby Sweater by Carole Barenys) by including the same decorative stitching.
My gauge matched the pattern gauge and I made the newborn size and it measures 5-3/4” across at the brim (but 6” wide at the fullest part of the hat) and 6” tall. It seems a bit tall and I am wondering if it is going to slip down over baby’s eyes? I noticed that a few others that have knit the pattern have mentioned this and some have had to fold the brim up. I decided to reknit the hat using smaller needles and not make it as tall. I also wanted the knitting to be a bit tighter so using smaller needles should do the trick.
Using the following measurements from Bev’s size charts (http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/size-chart.html#hat) I see that this is what she recommends:
Newborn Head Circumference is 13” - 14 “ so hat circumference should be = 11.5” - 13” and hat height should be = 5.5 to 6”

These are the modifications that I made to the Newborn size.
Brim:
Knit the same - garter stitch on 72 sts with size 3 needles for 6 rows.
Body of Hat:
I switched to size 4 DPNs (instead of size 6) and again incorporated the pattern into the hat to match the sweater, but I only knit until it measured 3-1/2” from the brim and then began the decreases for the hat shaping.
Top Knot:
I followed the directions until the part when you switched to 2 DPNs and have 8 stitches. I knitted 6 rows and then switched back to the size 3 DPNs for the rest of the Top Knot. Instead of casting off I just collected the last 6 stitches up with a needle and gathered them together, knotted the yarn and hid the end inside.
My second hat’s measurements are pretty much the same at the brim: 5-3/4” (stretches to 14” in diameter) and the height measurement is now 5” which now may be too short, but it looks proportional so we shall see. Babies heads ARE disproportionately large so maybe the first hat will fit? … Now I have two hats so one should fit or maybe the small one for a while and then they can switch to the larger one? - I will report back after the baby is born how this mystery unfolds, lol.
Update: Bailyn is wearing the larger hat in the top photo and she is 4 months old. In the second photo she is wearing the smaller hat and she is one month old - so I would say that the smaller sized hat is good for 0-3 months and the larger hat 3-6 months.
