Notes

Bernat Baby Softee yarn is a #3 “light” weight yarn. According to the label, on US size 6 needles 30 rows and 22 stitches = a 4” x 4” swatch.

Finished sock measures 3-1/4” from heel to toe using the above yarn.

I modified this pattern to match the sweater and hat that I have knitted. I have never hand knitted a heel and so this is my first attempt at “wrapping and turning” to prevent a hole during shortrow knitting. After several attempts (3 socks) and watching several youtube videos I arrived at the following pattern. I am sorry if these are overly detailed notes, but this will help me when I reknit them again sometime and it may be helpful for someone else as well.

Starting with size 3 DPN co 24 sts loosely, divide equally on 3 needles, join and place row marker.

Cuff
Row 1 - k
Row 2 - p
Rows 3-6, repeat rows 1 & 2 twice more.

SWITCH TO SIZE 4 DPNS

Rows 7-10 - k
Row 11 - p2, slip 2 as if to p, with yarn held in front of work, repeat this for entire row
Row 12-15 - k
Row 16 repeat row 11
Row 17-20 - k

Heel
Row 21
Knit 12 and divide these stitches between two needles for flexibility (you will be working the heel on the next 12 stitches).

Making wraps:
k11, {slip next stitch purl-wise to RH needle, switch yarn to opposite side, return slipped stitch back to LH needle, switch yarn to original side, turn}
p10, repeat directions from between brackets
k9, repeat directions from between brackets
p8, repeat directions from between brackets
k7, repeat directions from between brackets
p6, repeat directions from between brackets

NOTES on Picking up wraps:

  • knit side directions: pick up front leg of wrap and place on LH needle, k both stitch and wrap together through the back loop, turn.
  • purl side directions: pick up back leg of wrap and place on LH needle, p both stitch and wrap together, turn.)

continuing …
slip 1st stitch, K5, repeat directions for knit side.
slip 1st stitch, p6, repeat directions for purl side.
slip 1st stitch, K7, repeat directions for knit side.
slip 1st stitch, p8, repeat directions for purl side.
slip 1st stitch, k9, repeat directions for knit side.

Row 22
K8 and leave these on first needle, pick up second needle and k4, the next stitch will have your last wrap on it (which was actually wrapped during a purl row), pick up front leg of wrap and place on LH needle (just like knit side directions above), k both stitch and wrap together through the back loop, k3. K next 8 stitches on 3rd needle. There should now be 8 stitches on each of the 3 needles again.

Foot
Rows 23-37 k (stockinette)

Toe
Row 38 k2 tog, k10, K2togtbl, k10
Row 39 k2 tog, k9, K2togtbl, k9
Row 40 k2 tog, k8, K2togtbl, k8
Row 41 k2 tog, k7, K2togtbl, k7

Finishing
Arrange sts on two needles - 8 sts on each needle.
Close toe using Kitchener stitch.
Weave in and trim ends.

Make 2.

If you would like (not necessary) to make the “seam” (beginning and ending of your circular rows) on the opposite side for sock 2, just do the shortrows for the heel in the FIRST 12 stitches instead of the second 12 stitches. Just remember to alter the directions for row 22 accordingly.
