This design was one of the winners of the Rowan design awards 2013. The theme was Between the Wars. There is a short interview with Alex Pengelly, the designer who was a student at the Winchester School of Art at this time on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN6NuuRLM9Y) I found out that one of her main inspirations for the design was the pioneering female aviator Amelia Earhart, who the design is named after. Working in the aviation industry myself, not as a pilot but as an air traffic controller, makes this knit which I already love, even more special to me.
11/1 - I started this jumper back in October but am only just getting around to finishing it after Christmas present knitting taking priority for a while. I love the pattern for the body which is an easy 14 stitch 16 row repeat. I have written it out into a chart making it even easier to follow. I chose the colours which the jumper was originally designed it as they are just the kind of autumnal colours I like wearing and thought they worked perfectly together.
19/1 - Front and back complete. Only a few metres of main body colour left. If I’d been making the medium size I would definitely have needed a fourth ball. Sleeves started.
31/10 - I finished knitting the arms of the jumper back in March 2014. It then sat around waiting to be seamed and finished. However, some time off work and the arrival of the autumn finally kickstarted me into action and I finished my Amelia. I am so happy with it. It is the most accomplished knit I have completed as yet and fits really well. The only change I made was that I completely seamed both arms to the body and then knitted the neck rib in the round. I picked up two less stitches to ensure that the pattern worked. I cast off using 2.75mm needles as the edge was a bit too loose with 3.25mm needles. The one watch out I would have is that I used up virtually all of the Avocado and Gilt coloured yarn even after undoing my tension squares. The pattern says that you only need 3 balls of the body and arm colours for the small and medium sizes. I knitted the small and I would have run out even with another couple of rows.
Update August 2018
I’ve decided to write a short update on this project to say that nearly 4 years after I finished it, my Amelia is my most worn and favourite autumn/winter jumper. I probably love it more than back then and the yarn has worn amazingly well. It has not pilled one bit and looks just as good, in fact probably better than it did in 2014.
I cannot recommend Felted Tweed more highly and the only question that I have to ask myself is why haven’t I knitted anymore projects using this yarn. Something I need to rectify ASAP.
