Have finished the first button band and picked out the buttons - antique glass ones from before the first world war. My husband gave them to me about 30 years ago and they've been waiting for the right project.

I only have 8 balls of this, but I want to make a cropped version with 3/4 length sleeves, so I think I can eke it out…
Decided to knit at the same gauge as I did for my Treit, which had a great hand.
I’m thinking I’ll need 2.5 balls for the top, 2.5 for the body. then one ball apiece for the sleeves and the final ball for the button band and neck. Fingers crossed!

Divided for the sleeves and knit 1” of the body before finishing with the 3rd ball. Feeling much better about the yarn quantity now.

12-16-2023 cuffs and button bands in different dyelot

In the end, I decided that I really wanted the arms to be longer so I ordered two more balls of cowslip to knit the ribbing and the button bands. So, I took the 8th ball of the original dyelot and made the sleeves as long as I could (proper 3/4 length for my long arms is 14”) and then added 3.5” of twisted rib.

12-27-2023 - finished except blocking

Front bands 103 stitches. Button band done with the below-gauge size needles and made only 2 rows of icord and bound off 1 stitch to work with my smaller buttons. Happy to have found a place for these antique, german, green glass buttons from before the first world war. My husband gave them to me about 30 years ago and they’ve been waiting all this time for the right project. I’m sure it will also be prettier once it’s washed and blocked.

  • deeper curve of neckline

  • shortened and tapered body

  • continued outer purl bands to neckline

  • added extra rows on the outside of center purl bands so that when I picked up for the button bands there was a row of vertical knit stitches to mirror the icord binding.
