Knit according to the pattern apart from the straps, where I wanted something that wouldn’t stretch out.

For the straps I used 2mm rattail cord from M&J Trimmings, which is a lovely shiny satin that comes in lots of colours. I used two lengths of cord for each strap. I inserted the cords through the second row of knitting from front to back, about three stitches apart, and sewed the two ends to each other on the inside of the top.

The straps aren’t actually stitched to the knitting at all, they just loop through the stitches. This also made it easier to sew, because I could pull the cord through far enough to use my sewing machine to stitch the ends together.
