Notes

Throughout the year I visit Laurie at her Disdero Ranch and give a helping hand where I’m able, whether it’s doing inventory of the latest wool mill delivery, discussing new projects (dyeing, felting, knitting), or sweating through sheep shearing day.

It was a beautiful crisp day on March 8th, 2020, when I dropped in to show Laurie the completed Right Around the Corner Shawl, and the first tiny doe of the year came out from underneath her heat lamp in the hut to say hello to us. It’s a wonderful experience getting to know the animals that make up what I’m knitting/weaving/crocheting/felting, but this was an extra special treat!

The yarn used in this project comes from three different farm critters. The Copaca is an 80/20 blend of Corriedale sheep and Alpaca (colour: Camel), and the Moco is a 50/50 blend of Mohair (Angora goat) and Corriedale sheep (colour: Latte). Both yarns are very light and incredibly warm.

Knitting Notes:

  • Tight knitter, so using a slightly larger needle.
  • An easy and relaxing knit, love the way these two colours look together.

Body:

  • Began and ended with A (Latte) row - Latte being the smaller hank @ 112g.
  • Last row of stripes = 148 stitches.
  • 73 ridges in A
  • 72 ridges in B (Camel)
  • 61g Latte remaining

Borders:

  • Latte - Increased to 176 stitches = 30 ridges
  • Camel - Increased to 208 stitches = 30 ridges

Pre-block:

  • 72”/183cm wingspan (not incl. tassels)
  • 31.5”/80cm depth
  • One gold e-bead added to tail of each tassel before attaching to shawl.

Post-block:

  • 79”/200.5cm wingspan (not incl. tassels)
  • 36.5”/92.5cm depth

Latte - 2g remaining
Camel - 62g remaining

Finishing Notes:

  • Each tassel wrapped 50 times, but for the Copaca do a few extra wraps (20 more maybe?) so both match in size. Wool plumps up after blocking more than Alpaca, so the Moco tassel is quite full and fluffy.

  • This shawl is very light yet very warm. Great for a walk or outing on cool day.
