I’m going to make a smaller version of this shawl. I have 660 yards of a purple yarn I think would work well. That’s 100 grams in total, so 6.6 yards per gram (technically, both skeins are 52 grams, but I’m going to round down just to be safe).
Based on Britt-MarieK’s notes, she used 47 grams for Charts A-C (which is about 210 yards of that yarn), 53 grams for Chart D (which is about 237 yards), and 32 grams of the smocking section (about 170 yards). That is about 617 yards in total (of course, based on a different yarn with a different knitter). I’m considering reducing the number of rows of leaves in Charts A/B from 4 rows to 3, and begin Chart C there, but I’m also a very tight knitter… let’s get started and see where I end up!

And at the end of Charts A/B, ready to plow into C. I’ve now used 20 grams of yarn (32 grams left of the first skein), so let’s see how much farther I can go!
04-20-2020… later
Just finished up Chart C. I’ve used 27 grams of yarn (which is about 180 yards… yeah, I’m a very tight knitter…) and have 25 left of the first skein. Now to the hooters! I decided to add an extra stitch at the beginning of the rows to give 4 purled stitches before the owls since there are 4 after the owls at the end of the rows.

To the eyes! I decided to use purple beads for the eyes and liked the placement that Ancalima did: Row 83, stitches 7 and 12.

And the hooter heads are done with 12 grams of yarn left of the first skein.

I ran out of yarn in Row 106 and switched in the second skein there. Halfway done!

Just finished Chart D with 45 grams of yarn to go.
I decided to do the wider smocking in this project. I’m also going to leave the setup rows before the smocking as reverse stockinette, rather than having that garter ridge right beforehand. I’ll switch to K2, P2 the row right before smocking.

And done with the smocking section with 31 grams of yarn left.

Took several days off and am now starting Chart E with 30 grams of yarn left.

I took a few months off from knitting and just finished this. I was not a fan of Chart E. Between both lace- and cable-work, it felt like it was taking an eternity to complete.
Generally, I used about one gram of yarn per row. To make sure I had enough for the crochet bind off, I completed Chart E1 one time, then only knit the first row of E1 (while using the cable stitch from Row 7). When binding off, that changed the number of stitches in the lace sections, so I changed the S2KP in the center of each section to just a single knit stitch to bind off. I started the bind off with 7 grams of yarn and ended with 5 grams (so, I might’ve been able to complete all of E1, but I was glad to be done with it).
Now to block!
