Notes

This is my third-ever crochet project, and apparently I’m feeling brave enough to try to rewrite a pattern into something I want, based on seeing another Animal on here. My notes for the pattern are below!

Model images: Picture 1; Picture 2

  27. in back loops only, [sc in next 6 sc, dec over 2 sc] around (42)
  28. in both loops again, [sc in next 5 sc, dec over 2 sc] around (36)

  31. [sc in next 2 sc, dec over 2 sc] around (18)
  32. [sc in next sc, dec over 2 sc] around (12)
  33. [dec over 2 sc] around, sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (6) whipstitch through remaining sc and pull tight to close hole.

Oval eyes (white yarn, make 2):
Same as original pattern, but copied here.

  1. magic ring with 6 sc (6 stitches)
  2. [2 sc in each sc] across (12)
  3. sc in next 2 sc, hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, sl st in next sc, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Round nose (red yarn):
Same as original pattern, but copied here.

  1. magic ring with 6 sc (6 stitches)
  2. [2 sc in each sc] around (12)
  3. [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around (18)
  4. [sc in each sc] around (18)
  5. [sc in each sc] around (18)
  6. [sc in next sc, dec over 2 sc] around, sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (12)

Position the two white eyes and round nose above the mouth. ONLY sew on the whites of the eyes once you decide where they look best (the nose will be sewed on AFTER the bottom eyelids are created). Sew two glass eyes or buttons on the eye whites or crochet two small circles with the black yarn for pupils to attach.

Pupils (if using instead of glass eyes or buttons; black yarn, make 2)

  1. magic circle with 4 sc (4 stitches)
  2. [2 sc in each sc] across (8) sl st in next sc, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing

Bottom eyelids (orange yarn, below each eye):
I did not have a set pattern for this. I picked up stitches below each eye, going corner to corner, and sc each of these stitches. I then made two rows above this row, decreasing stitches at the beginning and end of both rows.

Sew on the nose between the eyes; it will most likely cover parts of the eyelids. Be sure to stuff the nose before you completely sew it on!

Eyebrows (black yarn, make 2):
ch 10
1. sc in next 2 ch; hdc in next ch; 2dc in next 4 ch; hdc in next ch; sc in next 2 ch
sl st and finish

Sew the eyebrows above the eyes.

Inside of mouth (black yarn):

  1. ch 2, 3 sc in second chain from hook (3 stitches)
  2. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in each sc] across the 3 sc (6)
  3. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] across (9)
  4. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] across (12)
  5. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc] across (15)
  6. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] across (18)
  7. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc] across (21)
  8. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc] across (24)
  9. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc] across (27)
  10. ch 1, turn. [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc] across (30)

Make another of the inside of the mouth. For the second one, use the orange yarn for the first 6 rows to make the tongue before switching to the black yarn. If you want, you can embroider a crease down the center of the tongue with the red yarn.

There will be two semicircles; seam them together to make one larger (and somewhat bent in half) circle. Sew that circle into the opening created in the head and stuff it as you close up the final few stitches (before sewing the mouth in, I weighed the head down by sewing a few lead sinkers onto the bottom).

Little teeth (white yarn, make 5):

  1. ch 2, 1 sc in the second chain from hook (1 stitch)
  2. ch 1, turn. 2 sc in sc (2) sl st next stitch and break yarn, leaving a long tail to sew

Big teeth (white yarn, make 2):

  1. ch 2, 1 sc in the second chain from hook (1 stitch)
  2. ch 1, turn. 2 sc in sc (2)
  3. ch 1, turn. sc across (2)
  4. ch 1, turn. 2 sc in each sc (4) sl st next stitch, finish off, leaving a long tail to sew

Sew the teeth onto the bottom lip with the two larger ones on the ends.

Hair (mostly red yarn with some orange and pink yarn highlights around the eyes/eyebrows; use black yarn on the eyebrows)… I used the knotting technique shown in the first link.:
