I had a bit of yarn leftover from the Tiriltunge Onesie, so I improvised this hat to go with it.
- CO 80 stitches with smaller needles
- (K1, P1) around for 6 rows, switch to larger needles
- K4, P2, K4, P4, K4, P2, K to end of row for 2 rows
- K4, P2, 2/2 Left Cable, P4, 2/2 Right Cable, P2; K4 then begin trefoil pattern until end of round (I knit an additional 1 stitch before the first decrease to offset the pattern, which doesn’t leave it perfectly centered)
- Continue the cables and lacework as established in onesie pattern until total hat length is 4.5”
- Decreases: (SSK, K2Tog, continue 16 stitches in pattern) until end of round
- Continue in pattern until last stitch; move that stitch to beginning of next row to decrease
- Repeat Rows 6 and 7, decreasing stitches between decreases by 2 each repeat
- Continue until 8 stitches remain, then BO and finish
If I made this again, I’d cast on another stitch at the beginning of the row (for 81 total stitches) and begin the trefoil lace patterns right before/after the purled columns (and start the decreases after that first stitch, which would result in an odd number in the last section between decreases).
