I knitted to 6 inches instead of 5.5. The hat fits great on a medium size head. If I were to make it for a larger head I would increase to 6.5 to bring it down further over the ears. It does cover the ears at 6 inches for a medium size head. There is a good stretch in the band to accommodate most head sizes. I like the pattern, easy to follow.
