Notes

This seeds and bars pattern was originally knitted in the SW parishes of the island, where my Gallienne ancestors lived. The true meaning of the name is uncertain but it was first recorded in Guernsey in the 13th century. The Galliennes were mostly fishermen and clearly didn’t get around much(!) as the name is still concentrated in this part of the island, though they probably wore their guernseys on trips to Cornwall, where variations of this simple pattern have also been recorded.
