Time to tackle some more ambitious Polly Plum squares for a cosy Afghan, cushion cover, wall hanging… whatever takes my fancy. Maude is a gorgeous, textured design - quite challenging but very rewarding. I struggled a bit and chickened out of the woven corners and did the cross-overs instead, then had a moment of clarity lying in bed in the middle of the night and realised how they should be done! Maybe next time…

Ilsa completed - another deeply textured design. I used trebles (US dcs) for the final round to achieve the same size as Maude. I’m using a DK weight yarn and the finished size is just 9.5 inches, despite using a 5mm hook. I must be a tight crocheter.
Using Polly’s colour placement sheets is really helping me get a good impression of the finished result. See here.

Two more squares finished, River and Rick. Both quite tricky but oh so much fun to make!

Completed Inara at a leisurely pace. Had to add an extra round after round 10 to bring up the size, then adjust the final two rounds to make sure the stitch count was correct at the end. Took the opportunity to vary the stitch pattern slightly. Another great design from Polly, from the Shiny collection (like River). Every square I make is my new favourite!

Added another - this one is an amalgam between the 9” Harold block and Harry’s border, both from the Lovestruck collection. Went a bit off-piste with the border again to adjust the size.

Two more over the last few days - June and Lucy. Wasn’t too sure about Lucy’s raised centre - lovely on its own but I thought the thick texture might contrast too much with the other squares, so I cut it down slightly: 2ch instead of 3ch between the fpscs and only 2 spiral rounds, not 3. Very happy with both squares - I’m learning a bit more every time!

Decided to try Victor from “Love skunked”. I followed Polly’s brilliant instructions for avoiding a slightly wonky border - trying to avoid being OCD about these squares but if something just doesn’t look quite right it can be irritating! If you make a mistake then rectify (fudge) it so that it doesn’t show, that’s another matter entirely! There are FOUR serious fudges in Victor .

Finished Zoë, another one from the Shiny collection. Just two more squares then I think I’ll start to join them. Looking forward to exploring pretty continuous join techniques and especially the border - my favourite bit! I need to be told firmly when it’s time to stop. (Though of course there’s always the possibility of adding extra rounds of smaller squares or whatever later on…!)

Did a bit more matchmaking by adding George’s border to Johnny. They look very happy together . Just one more square to go…

Fan Dance completed!

Joined, edged and finished! May well be tempted to add more rows to the border eventually as I have plenty of leftover yarn (of course!!) but meanwhile I’m really pleased with it. For the scallops on the (current) last round I used round 13 from Laurie Dales’s Floral Dimension afghan square. Thank you Laurie, and thank you Polly Plum
