DK yarn held single is a bit a challenge for this project. I like the result, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re really not in a hurry for the finish.

I knitted strips two and three repeats broad, as well as one - the original uses single strips. Single crochet to join, finished with garter stitch border and i-cord cast off.

I added tiny buttonholes in the cast off every eight stitches or so, to help with blocking on wires, but I haven’t been able to face actually blocking it yet.

The yarn is a nice budget choice for this sort of project.
