Story

Sometime in the beginning of 2008 my mom called and told me she was making me a blanket. She said she found some yarn at a garage sale in my favorite color. She said it was so soft and just knew I would love it. When I was just 3 years old my favorite color was “blue like the sky”. Even though my favorite color has changed to Royal blue as a teenager and then later to any and every other color she always remembers that I liked blue like the sky. She also mentioned that her hands started shaking really bad and she spilled coffee on it. My mom and I both have a hereditary tremor passed from her mom along with the love of crafting. She said, “don’t worry, I’ll wash it when I’m done.”

Then suddenly, on Feb 16, 2008 my mom passed away. When I was at her house for the funeral I found her basket with the blanket and left over yarn and brought it home with me to finish. It is just a double crochet blanket which is all she ever did. I don’t know what hook she used but I tried a few and think an I hook comes the closest. Ironically, I also spilled coffee on the blanket when my hands were shaking on day but I don’t think I’ll ever wash it.

I know there isn’t enough yarn to finish it so I will have to take a sample with me to try to fine a close enough match or pick a contrasting color that will work.

I picked it up off and on over the years since she died and tried to work on it but I got too emotional and couldn’t do it. Now, after 12 years I’ve decided to try it again. Hopefully this time I can finish it and then I will think of her every time I use it. It will always smell like her and coffee.

4/6/2020 I figured out what yarn she was using. I have a skein of Caron simply soft in soft blue in my stash and it matches exactly.

I picked this up again and I plan to finish it. This is just an emotional one to work on since my mom started it. I remember that last phone call when she talked about this blanket she was making for me like it was yesterday. It was 14 years ago now.

I finished about a week ago and forgot to take pictures. I added a border with a variegated yarn that complements. I wanted a border that would help hold it together as the single crochet in the lighter yarn with larger size hook made it really stretchy. I alternated rounds of sc and hdc to make this border and it works great. Now it is finally finished.
