Notes

Making this for an amazing friend and neighbor who’s fighting Stage IV Cancer. She deserves something functional AND pretty…I love this pattern with its feathers. I wanted something soft but warm; this yarn base is perfect. Using several different colors of Miyuki beads to correspond to the different colors in this gradient yarn.

  • Using Fleagle Beader size 1.0 for beading. Great tool for beading! Size 6 Caravan Miyuki beads from The Loopy Ewe; approximately 220 beads per tube.

  • Using Gunmetal Iris beads for all charted “feathers” through end of chart #4.

  • CO and completed GS tab on size 7 needles.

  • Chart 1 - 1 repeat (15 stitches).

  • Chart 2 - 4 repeats (104 beads used to date).

  • Chart 3 - 5 repeats (400 beads after 4 repeats; 504 beads used to date). 26 feathers across at end of chart.

  • Chart 4 - 2 repeats (240 beads in this section; 744 used to date). 31 feathers across at end of chart; 415 stitches on needle going in to transition.

  • Transition Chart - 1 repeat, but worked with beads along the spine. 35 “spines” with four rows of beading; total of 140 beads used in this chart. 884 total beads used to date, although I used different colored beads (Matte Metallic Patina Iris) than in feathers to match the yarn better, and also for some variety. These beads are BEAUTIFUL! Note: technically, this would have used just over 1/2 a tube of these beads; however, sensing their extreme costliness, the Couch Gods demanded more sacrifices than usual, so I’m sticking with my “1 tube” estimate for this section, not counting what’s used in border.

  • Chart 5 (Border) - 439 stitches going in to this section; increased needle to size 9. 1 repeat of rows 1-8 (only made it through row 6). Began with only 22g of yarn left; had removed a small amount of green so that border would be mostly golden brown color. Continued Patina Iris beads in same spine as in Transition Chart, and added gold beads (Silver Lined Gold AB) on SK2P stitch, which began at tip of last “feather” from above. Beads used in this section - three beads in each column, alternating columns of Gold AB (36 columns) = 108; and Patina Iris (37 columns) = 111. Total beads to date: 1,103. As for yarn, 18g left after row 2. 13g left after row 4. 8g left after row 6. (Did not do YOs on row 6.)

  • Bind off - 455 stitches on needle. Increased right needle (bind off needle) to size 10. Used go-to standard stretchy bind off that I prefer (k2, * knit together tbl, k1). This combination worked very well; bind off was very fluid and has a lovely drape to it. blush Added Gold AB bead on every other stitch. Beads used in this section: 227. Total beads for entire shawl: 1,330. 2g of yarn left upon completion of bind off. That was a little close for my comfort!
